Who We Are

Africa Realities Media, also known as ARM, is an independent editorial, research and public-information platform.

We produce analysis, commentary, investigations, historical information, country and regional profiles, public-interest content, lived experiences and educational resources about the African Great Lakes Region and related developments across Africa.

Our principal geographical focus includes the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. We also examine developments in neighbouring and connected countries where political, military, economic, social or humanitarian events affect the wider region.

ARM does not serve governments, political parties, armed groups, foreign powers, diplomatic alliances, multinational interests, lobbying networks or propaganda campaigns.

Our responsibility is to the public, particularly ordinary people and communities whose experiences are frequently excluded from government statements, diplomatic discussions, institutional reports and mainstream international media.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance political rights, democratic freedoms and human rights throughout the African Great Lakes Region.

Africa Realities Media exposes injustice, discrimination, repression, exclusion and unequal treatment affecting people and communities because of their ethnicity, tribal belonging, nationality, economic status, poverty, social position, political marginalisation or powerlessness.

We give particular attention to communities whose suffering is ignored, minimised or hidden because they lack political influence, financial resources, media access, international protection or powerful organisations capable of defending their interests.

ARM believes that every person and every community in the Great Lakes Region deserves equal dignity, equal rights, equal protection and equal access to justice, regardless of ethnicity, tribe, nationality, gender, social class, economic position or political influence.

Through research, analysis, historical documentation, observation, logical interpretation, lived experience and public engagement, we challenge narratives, institutions and power structures that allow injustice to continue.

Our mission is also to ensure that the experiences of affected, marginalised and underrepresented communities are recorded, understood and included in the historical memory of the region.

We seek to strengthen democratic accountability, defend fundamental freedoms, promote justice and amplify the voices of people who are too often ignored because they are poor, displaced, excluded, politically unprotected or powerless.

ARM brings relevant information together in one place. We connect events, records, decisions, experiences and historical developments and present them in a distinctive, understandable and useful way.

Our work is not limited to repeating information that has already been published. We examine how different events, policies, political decisions, conflicts, alliances and historical developments relate to one another.

Creating a Historical Repository

The region’s history is often presented through incomplete, competing or politically influenced narratives. Some events and experiences are extensively documented, while others remain scattered, marginalised, suppressed or gradually forgotten.

ARM collects, organises and preserves information that may otherwise disappear from public memory. This includes historical records, public documents, political analysis, community testimony, lived experience and accounts of conflict, displacement, repression, resistance, injustice, social change and regional cooperation.

Our aim is to make this growing body of knowledge accessible to communities, journalists, researchers, students, policymakers, educators, diaspora populations and future generations.

We believe that the history of the region should not be written only by governments, powerful institutions, foreign actors or those with the greatest access to international media and political platforms.

The experiences, memories and perspectives of ordinary people must also form part of the historical record.

Our Editorial Approach

Africa Realities Media researches, analyses, listens, observes and reports.

ARM is not a court. Our writers and contributors are not judges or prosecutors, and we do not claim the authority to determine criminal guilt or issue judicial verdicts.

Our work is based on research, publicly available information, historical records, observation, logical interpretation, community testimony and lived experience.

We examine patterns, decisions, contradictions, consequences and unanswered questions that governments, institutions, political interests and international actors may ignore, minimise or refuse to investigate.

Our observations and interpretations are not judicial findings. However, the absence of a court judgment does not prevent journalists, survivors, affected communities, researchers and independent observers from raising serious questions, examining available information and calling for credible investigations.

Where allegations of crimes, human rights abuses, political violence, occupation, discrimination, exploitation or international wrongdoing remain unresolved, ARM supports independent investigation, due process and accountability through competent judicial institutions.

We distinguish between documented information, allegations, observations, interpretations, opinions and judicial conclusions.

ARM does not declare people guilty. We report realities, analyse available information, identify contradictions and call on the institutions legally authorised to investigate, prosecute and judge alleged crimes to fulfil their responsibilities.

Lived Experience and Community Knowledge

Africa Realities Media recognises lived experience as an important source of knowledge.

People directly affected by conflict, displacement, political violence, repression, occupation, discrimination, poverty, exploitation and institutional silence often understand these realities in ways that official documents cannot fully capture.

Survivors, refugees, displaced people, affected families, journalists, community leaders, activists, women, young people and diaspora communities are not simply subjects to be described by governments, researchers or international organisations. They are also knowledge holders.

Their experiences can reveal realities that may be absent from government records, diplomatic statements, institutional reports and mainstream media coverage.

ARM listens to people who may have limited access to political protection, public platforms, mainstream media or international institutions.

We recognise that personal testimony and lived experience must be presented responsibly and understood within their historical, social and political context. Where possible, testimony is considered alongside other available information.

Speaking Clearly About Injustice

Africa Realities Media does not use soft or diplomatic language to conceal suffering, injustice or political responsibility.

Repression should not automatically be described as stability. Occupation should not be disguised as a security arrangement. Exploitation should not automatically be presented as development. Political silence should not always be treated as neutrality.

ARM examines not only those directly responsible for harmful actions but also the wider systems that may enable, finance, excuse, protect or benefit from injustice.

These systems may include political alliances, military partnerships, lobbying networks, commercial interests, diplomatic protection, access to natural resources and unequal international standards.

Our work connects local realities to regional and international structures of power.

We may express anger, disappointment or discontent where these are honest responses to suffering, oppression and injustice, particularly when affected communities lack safe and effective platforms through which to communicate their experiences.

Clear language does not remove our responsibility to distinguish evidence from allegation, fact from interpretation and editorial analysis from judicial findings.

Why Africa Realities Media Is Different

Africa Realities Media speaks to Africa and to the developed world. Many abuses facing African people are committed by African states and ruling elites, but they are often protected by international silence, lobbying, public relations, trade interests, migration deals and unequal global accountability. While governments pay lobbyists to present a good image abroad, ordinary African people continue to face violence, hunger, disease, poverty, repression and exclusion. We challenge the normalisation of African suffering and demand equal truth, equal justice and equal protection.

Exposing Injustice in Africa

Africa Realities Media is an independent African accountability platform based in London. We report, analyse and challenge the systems that shape African suffering, silence African victims and protect abusive power. We are not here to repeat diplomatic language. We are here to ask the questions that are often avoided: why are African deaths treated as normal? Why are African victims given less urgency? Why are governments that imprison, exclude, displace or kill their own people protected when they serve powerful international interests?

Africa Realities Media gives space to writers, researchers, experts, activists, community voices, campaigners, analysts and people with lived experience who want to contribute thoughtful, responsible and courageous content about the changes needed in the region, as well as the political, economic, cultural and social African realities that are often ignored, minimised or misrepresented. Our articles and videos aim to encourage debate, raise awareness, stimulate critical thinking and support reflection. We seek to help people in the Great Lakes Region understand their rights to human rights, development and wellbeing, while also encouraging decision-makers to be more transparent, responsive and accountable.
